Kitagawa Utamaro

Okita of Naniwaya Serving a Cup of Tea

The Ukiyo-e is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi (a unique kind of Japanese paper) handmade by Ichibei Iwano, a living national treasure. This makes the vivid colors and the soft, warm textures of woodcut prints come to life.

Okita was waitress at the Naniwa-ya, a teahouse located near the Nio-mon Gate in the groups of the Asakusa Kannon Temple. Along with the Ohisa and Toyohina, she was reputed to be one of the Three Beauties of the Kansei era (1789-1801). Okita's fresh charm in this print seems to reflect the art of Utamaro in his youthful years.
